4x4 Seat Conversions
Pro-Van converts commercial 4x4s back into vehicles that carry people. M1 crash tested seating, belts in the factory positions, trim finished so the result reads as a factory fit rather than a retrofit, and a certificate of conformity you can hand to your insurer.
Every conversion below is carried out by our own engineers at our workshop in Chelmsford, Essex, and the fitting is included in the package price. Pick your vehicle further down the page for the full specification, or call 01245 392225 if you would rather talk it through first.
Certified Scotseat fitters, and the certificate to prove it
Pro-Van is a certified Scotseat fitter and installer as well as a Scotseat supplier. Scotseat design, test and build the M1 crash tested seating we fit, and we are certified by them to install it. Supply and installation sit with one company rather than being split between a parts seller and a local garage, which matters when something needs putting right.
Every conversion we carry out leaves with a certificate of conformity, issued by us on completion, for your insurance company and for MOT purposes. It is the document an insurer asks for once a vehicle has had its seat count changed, and the one an MOT tester wants to see. We can only issue it for work we have carried out ourselves, so a box of parts bought on its own does not come with one and no fitter can issue one for a job they did not do.
The work is done by our own engineers at our own workshop in Chelmsford, Essex. Nothing is subcontracted.
What a seat conversion includes
- M1 crash tested seating. Rear seats tested to the standard used for passenger vehicles, not repurposed van seats or something built in a shed.
- Load rated mounting. Seat frames bolted to the vehicle floor on hardware rated for the job, into structural points rather than into trim.
- Belts in the factory positions. A three point belt for every fitted seat, mounted where the vehicle manufacturer put the anchorages, with a central lap belt and ISOFIX points where the seat design allows it.
- Trim finished properly. Panels, floor and side trim made good so the rear looks like it left the factory that way. No exposed edges, no bare metal, no bodges.
- Options handled in the same booking. Rear window uncovering and activation, bulkhead delete kits, flooring upgrades, grab handles and trim upgrades are quoted alongside the conversion rather than bolted on later.
- A certificate of conformity and a VAT invoice. The certificate is issued on completion for your insurance company and for MOT purposes, and it goes into your fleet file with the VAT invoice when the vehicle is handed back.
Most conversions keep enough of the load area for the vehicle to carry on working as a commercial. On the Land Cruiser and the Defender 110 the fold up layouts give you the boot back on the days you need it. Tell us what the vehicle has to carry and we will recommend the layout that suits it rather than the one with the biggest invoice.
Vehicles we convert
- Land Rover Defender 90 (L663). A rear seat added to the commercial 90, finished to match the front cab.
- Land Rover Defender 110 (L663). Our most requested conversion. A full rear bench in the 110 Hard Top, with bulkhead, trim and window options in one visit.
- Land Rover Discovery 5 Commercial. Rear seats added without losing a usable boot, with rear window uncovering and activation available at the same time.
- Toyota Land Cruiser Commercial. Fold up rear seating for the SWB and LWB, built for vehicles that get worked hard, with hard wearing trim.
- Ford Ranger 2-Seat Commercial. Now available and taking bookings, from £3,495 plus VAT fitted at our workshop, with build slots from early September and full compliance documentation supplied: see the Ford Ranger 2-Seat rear seat conversion. Full details and photographs are at ranger-seats.co.uk.
Driving something that is not on the list? Send us the make, model and year. If it can be converted safely we will tell you how, and if it cannot we will tell you that instead.
How the process works
- Send us the vehicle details. Make, model, year, current seat count and what the vehicle has to do day to day.
- We quote in writing. Parts, fitting, options and a realistic lead time, with nothing hidden.
- You book a date. We order the seats and hardware for your specific vehicle.
- We convert the vehicle. Most conversions are a one to two day job once the vehicle is with us, and it stays under cover for the whole booking.
- Handover. The vehicle goes back to you cleaned, tested and with the certificate of conformity and VAT invoice.
Before you book
Changing the number of seats in a commercial vehicle can change how it is taxed, insured and recorded. Tell your insurer before the work is done, notify DVLA if the seat count on the V5C changes, and check with your accountant if the vehicle is treated as a commercial for tax. Where a conversion is designed to retain the commercial classification, we will say so plainly when we quote, and we will tell you what the conversion does and does not change.
Guides and advice. The background to all of this is written up in full at pro-van.co.uk/guides, including is adding seats to a van legal? and the certificate of conformity, explained.
Why Pro-Van
- Certified Scotseat fitters and suppliers. Certified by the seat manufacturer to fit their seating, and a supplier of it, so one company answers for both the parts and the installation.
- A certificate of conformity with every conversion. Issued on completion for your insurance company and for MOT purposes.
- Our own engineers, our own workshop. Nothing is subcontracted. The people who quote the job are the people who do it.
- Specialists, not generalists. We have been converting commercial 4x4s since 2021 and the L663 Defender is our main vehicle. We already know where the awkward bits are.
- A factory look finish. If it does not look like it came out of the factory, it does not leave us.
- Clear package pricing. Fitting is included in the package price and the options are listed rather than hinted at.
- Fleet and trade work. Batched scheduling so you are never short of vehicles, a fixed price per unit and consolidated VAT invoicing.
- You can speak to someone. Call the workshop and get an answer from a person who has done the job, before and after the install.

Conversion questions
The things people ask before they book a conversion. If your question is not here, call 01245 392225 and ask.
What is included in a conversion?
M1 crash tested rear seating mounted to the vehicle floor on load rated hardware, a three point belt for every fitted position, and the trim, panel and floor work needed to finish it properly. Fitting is included in the package price, and you leave with the fitting paperwork and a VAT invoice.
Options such as rear window uncovering and activation, bulkhead delete kits and trim upgrades are quoted alongside the conversion so it is all done in one booking.
How long does it take?
Most conversions are a one to two day job once the vehicle is with us. The lead time to your booking date depends on parts availability for your vehicle. We quote a realistic date rather than an optimistic one, and we tell you if that changes.
Will it change my V5C, tax or insurance?
It can. Changing the number of seats in a commercial vehicle can change how it is taxed, insured and recorded. Tell your insurer before the work is done, notify DVLA if the seat count on the V5C changes, and check with your accountant if the vehicle is treated as a commercial vehicle for tax. We will tell you exactly what applies to your vehicle when we quote.
Do I lose the load space?
Not permanently. The layouts we fit are chosen so the vehicle still works as a commercial when you need it to, and folding options are available on most vehicles so the load area comes back on the days you need it. Tell us what the vehicle has to carry and we will recommend the layout that suits it.
Can you convert a Ford Ranger?
Yes. Our rear seat conversion for the Ranger 2-Seat Commercial double cab is now live. The backrest is fixed and the seat base unfolds to form a mini-bulkhead between the cab and the load area, with three 3-point belts on the vehicle's own factory mounts.
Two conversions are on order and due in at the start of September, so the first fitting slots are early September. That is two launch build slots. Call 01245 392225 or send an enquiry to reserve one.
Do you do fleet and trade work?
Yes. We schedule fleet work in batches so you are never short of vehicles, quote a fixed price per unit and issue consolidated VAT invoices. Repeat specifications are recorded so every vehicle comes back identical. We also convert on a trade basis for dealers and brokers preparing vehicles before handover.
How do I get a price?
Package prices are shown on each vehicle page. If you want something outside the standard packages, send us the vehicle, the year and the specification and we will come back with a written quote covering parts, fitting and lead time. Call 01245 392225 if you would rather talk it through.
